Drawing on some of the most passionate music of the early 1600s, the album features soprano Arwen Myers in sacred and profane love songs, along with examples of the ‘bastarda’ repertoire, an instrumental style transforming songs into fantastical, passionate caprices all their own. Works included by di Lasso, Monteverdi, Palestrina, Marini, Selma y Salaverde, and others. This album is meaningful as representative of the unique music we’re able to bring to the rural northern Rocky Mountain region. It also contributes to the early music and music recording canon given the unusual repertoire and our rare and compelling instrumentation of theorbo, dulcian, and baroque violin.

Leading the charge in designing the repertoire and concept for this album is lutenist John Lenti, a star amongst continuo players for the richness, verve, and variety of his strumming (and gracious humor). John, playing theorbo, resides in Seattle but often plays coast to coast with the Metropolitan Opera and other groups. Nate Helgeson from Salem, Oregon, will appear on dulcian, the precursor to the bassoon.  He is known for his chops, groove, and adoration of the French Baroque. Portland-based soprano Arwen Meyers is beloved amongst musicians and audiences alike for her relatable sincerity, humor, and love of walking the Wales coast, as well as her “crystalline tone and delicate passagework” (San Francisco Chronicle). Baroque violinist Carrie Krause resides in Bozeman, Montana, as concertmaster of the Bozeman Symphony and organizer of all things baroque when not on the trails.
