Eclipsed by his talented wife Clara during her concert tour, Schumann retreated to Leipzig in a state of depression, battling his inner voices through immersive study of the chamber works of the masters Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as the counterpoint of Bach. With Clara’s supportive collaboration, his three string quartets and other chamber works were the fruits. We share our favorite - a conversational, moody, and ultimately joyous dialogue - his premiere string quartet in early romantic style, on gut strings contemporaneous to the work’s debut. Concert Length: 2 hrs
