Carrie Krause wins Governor’s Arts Award

Sep 30, 2026

Congratulations to Carrie Krause on her 2026 Governor’s Arts Award, Montana’s highest artistic honor.
She was “honored for bringing high-quality baroque music to deeply rural communities and unlikely places across Montana.”
Here’s a bit more from the Arts Award page:
“Despite her global footprint, Krause’s heart and home are in Montana, where her artistry profoundly enriches the cultural landscape. She serves as the concertmaster of the Bozeman Symphony, the Opera Montana Orchestra, and the Montana Ballet Orchestra. In Bozeman, she maintains a studio of more than 30 students, inspiring emerging musicians to expand music’s reach beyond the concert hall.
As founder and artistic director of Baroque Music Montana (BaMM), she organizes over 40 performances annually across Montana—many free to the public. BaMM’s acclaimed albums and performances are frequently broadcast on Montana PBS (on 11th & Grant with Eric Funk) and national radio shows like Performance Today.”

In announcing the award to BaMM followers, Cristin Stokes, operations manager of BaMM writes:

“Violinist Carrie Krause is an accomplished performer whose career has taken her to stages around the world, including the BBC Proms, Leipzig Bach Festival, and Utrecht Early Music Festival. Yet her heart and home are firmly rooted in Montana. Based in Bozeman, she serves as concertmaster of the Bozeman Symphony and other ensembles, while maintaining a studio of more than 20 students.

As founder and artistic director of Baroque Music Montana, Carrie brings exceptional live music to communities across the state, organizing over 40 performances each year – many free to the public. She is especially passionate about making classical music accessible and meaningful in rural communities, and has said in the past, “Carnegie Hall is great, but Twin Bridges and Basin, Montana are as exciting and wonderful and important and meaningful to our musicians who are lucky enough to play there.”

Carrie is also endlessly imaginative, bringing music to unlikely places like trailheads and mountain peaks through projects like “Bach at Trails” and “Six High Places”, and she founded the Second String Orchestra, Bozeman’s beloved community orchestra for amateurs.”

If you’d like to celebrate with Carrie in person, everyone is welcome to attend the Governor’s Arts Awards Ceremony at the Montana State Capitol in Helena on December 3, 2026 at 2 pm. To read more about the award and meet the other incredible 2026 award recipients, visit https://art.mt.gov/gaa.
