Growing up in Fairbanks, AK, I’ve always been curious about the composer, John Luther Adams, who lived in a dry cabin as so many do in my hometown. The featured work we’ll share on the mountain tops is “The Wind at Maclaren Summit,” which references a pass I solo skied many times on family trips into the Maclaren Lodge – my family hauling the gear on snow machines and I skiing in the silence except when passing a bush full of white ptarmigan. I’m eager to share this work about wind in the elements, to see how the stress and release – calm and dissonance – of nature intersects with its abstract representation in this piece. —Carrie Krause
The times that I experience the purest joy are when I am dancing, or when I am in the mountains. For me, dancing in the mountains is the expression of my neverending wonder at these spectacular landscapes, and my gratitude for this remarkable existence and the sublime mysteries of earth. —Genevieve Trygstad-Burke
The public is invited to hike up and join as Carrie plays “The Wind at Maclaren Summit” from Adams’s Three High Places and other works. Carrie and Genevieve are both trail runners and hike at a brisk pace, so starting off before they do may be in order.
Parking lot departure for Carrie and Genevieve at 8:00 am on Thursday, July 13. Access via South Meadow Creek Rd out of McAllister, and parking advised at first switchback. S Meadow Creek Rd gets rougher once leaving the neighborhood, but passable for passenger vehicles. See map
Hike is approximately 8 miles round trip. Estimated hike time 4.5 hours (for those in trail running shape but carrying an instrument – please plan your departure time accordingly). Estimated summit time 10:00am.
Please note this is a pop-up style event and those joining should take responsibility for their own adventure. Changes and unpredictability are a given – please watch the website for updates, as well as Facebook & our Mailchimp emails, and feel free to be in email contact.
